Belsize Park went up from 1855, when the builder Daniel Tidey began a run of large stuccoed houses for the wealthy professional and commercial class, starting at the Belsize Lane end and moving on to Belsize Park and Buckland Crescent. By 1870 he had built more than 250 houses across the three Belsize estates, Belsize Park Gardens and Belsize Crescent among his roads.
Stucco houses cut into flats
They were family houses. By 1975, the Victoria County History records, most had been divided into flats and bed-sitters, with young, often professional occupants. The 2021 Census shows how far it went: in Belsize ward, 46.6% of the 5,992 households lived in part of a converted or shared house and 40.2% in a purpose-built block. Only one household in ten had a whole house.
When a stucco house is divided into flats, each kitchen tends to be a narrow run of units with a built-in single oven or a slim freestanding cooker. The parts that come out (racks, trays, side runners, fan cover) are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, on dust sheets.
Belsize Park's early blocks of flats
Purpose-built flats arrived early. Manor Mansions, put up in 1884 on the site of No. 48 Belsize Park Gardens, was one of the first blocks of its kind in London. Fifty years later came the Isokon, or Lawn Road Flats, by Wells Coates: a concrete block opened on 9 July 1934 and now listed Grade I. Its 32 flats were given very small kitchens, because meals were cooked in a communal kitchen and sent up to the floors on a dumb waiter.

Parking in zone CA-B, Belsize
Belsize Square, Belsize Park Gardens, England's Lane and Lawn Road all fall in Camden's zone CA-B on the council's zone data. It is controlled from 9am to 6.30pm on weekdays and from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays, with no Sunday hours. Camden's visitor permits are for a resident's own guests; a tradesperson's van comes under the council's trade permit, which covers resident bays and single yellow lines in the zone. Is a Saturday visit easier for parking?
After 1.30pm it is, because CA-B controls end then, and Sundays are not controlled at all. Weekends cost the weekday price.
