The Bellingham Estate makes up a big share of the SE6 side of Bell Green, and its cottage-style houses are where we spend a lot of the week. That estate was finished in 1923 to rehouse families out of the Deptford and Bermondsey slums, laid out around Bellingham Green with six tree-lined roads running into it. The kitchens there are interwar and often extended, so we see freestanding cookers, built-under singles, and the odd range where a family has reworked the back of the house.
Whatever the cooker, the method holds. The racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell after and the oven can go straight back on. Every oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
Parking on the Bellingham roads is tighter than it looks on a map. A number of the roadside trees were taken out years ago to make car spaces, and the estate roads still fill up by mid-morning, so we plan where the van and tank go before we arrive.
