The Livesey Memorial Hall on Perry Hill was built in 1911 for the workers of the South Suburban Gas Company, whose main works at Bell Green employed 380 men that year. The hall stands in what was the north-west corner of the works, and it has been listed at Grade II since 1995.
From gasworks to housing sites
In April 2017 Historic England turned down an application to list the gasholders behind the hall, saying only 16 examples in the country were designated, and the council then put them on its own local list. In October 2024 the council's planning committee approved Barratt London's plan for 262 flats on the former gasholder site, in blocks of up to 14 storeys, with 71 affordable homes: 37 at London Affordable Rent and 34 for shared ownership.
That is the first of three sites. Lewisham's Local Plan 2020-2040, adopted on 16 July 2025, allocates the retail park and the Sainsbury's next to it for mixed use with housing:

- 7.37 hectares; 748 to 1,831 homes allocated.
- Sainsbury's Bell Green
- 5.42 hectares; 550 to 1,347 homes allocated.
On the government's brownfield register (December 2025 entries) the gasholder site is the only one of the three with a planning permission, so the retail park and the Sainsbury's have none for homes yet, and the houses that are here are the closes round the edge.
Houses in the closes at Bell Green
The homes that are here now are mostly houses. In the census area that covers Bell Green itself (Lewisham 029A), with Holmshaw Close, Dillwyn Close, Lescombe Close, Silver Birch Close and Selworthy Road, 53.8% of the 684 households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census and 17.5% in a semi; only 23.7% were in flats. Half (50.7%) owned their home, and 18.0% rented from the council.
A small terraced house usually has a fitted kitchen with a built-in single or double, or a freestanding cooker between the units. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, with dust sheets down, and the door is split where its design allows.
