Belgravia was planned as one estate: in 1824 Thomas Cubitt took 19 acres in the centre of the development, Seth Smith the ground to its north and south, and Thomas and Joseph Cundy the sites further south, with building under way from 1826.
Stucco squares, and the mews behind them
The squares came first. Belgrave Square was started in 1826, with George Basevi designing the terraces; Eaton Square took about 30 years to finish, which is why its blocks differ in detail; Chester Square was laid out in 1840. Westminster's audit of the conservation area notes that in the second half of the 20th century many of the biggest houses on these squares became embassies and institutes or were split into flats. Behind them run the mews, mostly two storeys, with carriage doors on the ground floor in most of the originals and reached through arches. A house still kept whole on a square has room for a 90cm range or an AGA. A flat carved out of one, or a converted mews, more often has a built-in single or double. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Small houses and estate flats around Bourne Street
West of Eaton Terrace the houses shrink. The audit describes third and fourth rate terraces there, mostly two bays wide and two storeys over a basement or half basement; Graham Terrace dates from the 1820s, and on Bourne Street Samuel Arbutt built houses one bay wide in 1824. From the late 1860s the Grosvenor family encouraged model dwellings for working people, and Coleshill Buildings on Ebury Bridge Road (1871, white brick with French pavilion roofs) is one of them.
The Census shows how much of this corner is flats. Westminster 023H, which runs from Bourne Street and Graham Terrace to Pimlico Road and the Ebury Bridge estate, had 1,307 households in 2021: 82.9% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and 48.4% rented from the council or a housing association. Across the whole Knightsbridge and Belgravia ward the social rented share was 21.2%. The Ebury Bridge estate is being rebuilt by Westminster City Council as up to 781 homes, over half of them affordable; the first phase was finished in 2024 and enabling works on phase 2 began in February 2026. New flats like those usually have fitted kitchens; where an oven has a pyrolytic setting the cavity may stay clean, but the racks and the door glass still need doing.

Parking a van in Belgravia
Belgravia, from Wilton Crescent down to Pimlico Road, is Westminster's parking sub-zone A2. On the council's current table (March 2026) its paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays, and its resident bays 8.30am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday. There is no visitor permit in Westminster, and loading in a bay is capped at 20 minutes, so a weekday visit needs a paid bay or a zone A trade permit. Paid bays and single yellow lines are free from 1.30pm on Saturday and all day Sunday; resident bays stay controlled until 10pm on Saturday.

Our mews house has no parking outside. Is that a problem?
It depends on the street. The team needs somewhere to park; in sub-zone A2 on a weekday that means a paid bay or a zone A trade permit. Tell us the street when you book.
Which day is easiest for parking?
Sunday, when nothing in sub-zone A2 is controlled. A weekend visit costs the weekday price.
