Bean is the most recently formed of Kent's civil parishes, although the village itself has been on record since at least the 13th century, having been part of Stone before that, joined on by a narrow neck of land at Watling Street. The parish counted 1,643 people at the 2011 census and takes in two old hamlets, Bean and Stonewood.
The A2 on one side, ancient woodland on the other three
The northern boundary of the parish is the A2, the Roman Watling Street, and the other three sides are bounded by ancient woodlands. A description from 1797 has a great tract of woodland here running nearly to Green Street Green. Bean sits in a gap in those trees, 4.4 miles south-east of Dartford.
A tunnel is going through the chalk ridge
Kent County Council awarded an £18.6 million contract to Erith Contractors in January 2026 for the Bean Road underpass, a 75-metre tunnel driven under the chalk ridge of the B255 immediately north of Bluewater, taking a 3.5-metre Fastrack bus lane and a shared path for people walking and cycling. The full scheme comes to £25.5 million. Main works were set to start in spring 2026 and finish in summer 2027, tying the Whitecliffe development on the old Eastern Quarry into the shopping centre.

Nearly all the new building around here is on the quarry floor at Whitecliffe rather than in Bean, which stayed at its 1,643. Two sorts of address, then: housebuilder stock with the units and an integrated oven already in, and older village stock in Bean and Stonewood where a freestanding cooker is likelier. Do you need anything from inside the house?
Just access to the oven. The tank, the heat and the water are all in the van, so the racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out to us.
Is there a surcharge for coming out to Kent?
No. A single is £77 here and £77 anywhere else on the list.
How long does it take, and how do I know it works afterwards?
About 90 minutes for a single and two hours or so for a double, with a heat test before we go.
