Until recent times Bean was the southern end of the ancient parish of Stone, which on the Ordnance Survey drawing of 1797 was shaped like an egg-timer: the two halves met at a waist only 300 metres wide, where Watling Street crossed.
Bean village, south of the A2
The parish council's history fills in the rest. Bean was mostly woodland pasture, cleared slowly into farms; the tithe map of 1843 shows five of them. The direct road along Watling Street only came back when the A2 was built in 1922. The farmhouse at Lower Bean Farm, in a hollow out of sight of the village, dates from at least the 16th century, and Bean House carries a plaque dated 1909.
Today it is a village of family houses, most of them owned. In the census area that covers the village (Dartford 012B), 40.6% of the 643 households lived in a semi in 2021, 33.9% in a terraced house and 16.0% in a detached one; only 6.7% lived in a flat. Owners made up 75.5%, and 39.3% owned outright.
Houses owned for many years often have a kitchen that has been refitted at least once, and a bigger semi or detached house is where a double oven, a 90cm range or an AGA is more likely. Whichever it is, the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavities and the door glass are done by hand indoors.

Roads into Bean
Dartford Council's permit parking schemes page names roads in Dartford, Greenhithe and Darenth but none in Bean, so what the van needs is a drive or a legal space near the door; the signs on your road still decide. Near Bluewater, Kent County Council awarded an £18.6m contract in January 2026 for a 75-metre Fastrack underpass beneath Bean Road, with completion expected in 2027.

We have an AGA. What do we need to do before you come?
Switch it off the night before so it has cooled by the morning. The AGA cleaning page has the detail.
Do you come out at weekends?
Yes, seven days a week, and weekends cost the same as weekdays. The phone lines are open 8am to 7.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm at weekends.
Is the oven ready to use when you leave?
Yes. It is put back together and heated before we pack up, and you look inside it first.
