The Hallfield estate stands on land between Bishop's Bridge Road and Cleveland Square that was badly damaged in the Second World War; Paddington's borough council bought it from the Church Commissioners, and the first block of flats was ready in 1952.
Hallfield's ten-storey and six-storey blocks
Tecton drew the estate in 1947, and Denys Lasdun and Lindsay Drake saw it built. Fourteen residential blocks and the laundry were listed Grade II in 2011: six blocks of ten storeys, among them Caernarvon and Exeter, and eight of six storeys, such as Brecon and Tenby. Each floor is reached from a long concrete access balcony. The ten-storey blocks have a central pair of lifts beside the stair, and the six-storey blocks one lift. The listing notes that the kitchens were fitted with timber cupboards.
In the census area around the estate (Westminster 017D), 90.1% of the 695 households were in a purpose-built block in 2021, and 38.7% rented from the council; 27.4% rented privately and 29.0% owned.
A flat of that date usually has a compact kitchen with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single. The racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, in a lift block as anywhere else. In the flat, on dust sheets, the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split if its design lets it come apart.

A house kept whole has the room for a double oven or a 90cm range; once it is split into flats, each floor usually gets a smaller kitchen of its own.

Parking for the van in sub-zone B3
On Westminster's resident-bay map the whole grid, from Hereford Road across Queensway to Leinster Gardens and up to Hallfield, is one sub-zone, B3. The council's March 2026 table gives B3 two sets of hours: paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled until 6.30pm on weekdays and 1.30pm on Saturdays, but resident bays stay controlled from 8.30am to 10pm, seven days a week. Westminster does not issue on-street visitor permits, so the van needs a paid bay during the day. Give us the street, and the sign there settles the rest.
