Queen's Club Gardens is 33 red-brick mansion blocks holding 548 flats, three staff flats and 54 garages, wrapped round a central garden with two tennis courts. The lessees bought the freehold in 1993 through Queen's Club Gardens Limited, and 546 of the 548 are members now, with Rendall and Rittner managing the place. That is a great many kitchens in one square, drawn in the 1890s.
Mansion flats set the shape of the job
Developers built over the market gardens here from the 1870s, chasing the money in Kensington next door. Sir William Palliser ran much of that and named the streets after his family connections: Perham, Charleville, Gledstanes, Barton, Fairholme, Comeragh, Castletown and Vereker Roads, plus Challoner Street. He died suddenly in 1882, heavily in debt. What all of it left behind is mansion flats and red-brick terraces mostly cut into flats, so the kitchens are small and the cooker is usually one oven under the worktop rather than a range. The terraces that were never subdivided are where a double oven at £110 starts to appear.
Gliddon Road, the A4, and where the van waits
Barons Court station stands on Gliddon Road a short walk from Talgarth Road, opened on 9 October 1905 to a Harry Ford design in terracotta with Art Nouveau lettering, and was listed Grade II on 14 February 1985, its platform benches carrying the station name on enamelled panels along the back in a pattern found nowhere else on the Underground. Talgarth Road is the A4, dual carriageway from North End Road to Hammersmith Broadway, so nothing stops on it. We work off the side streets. ULEZ applies and the van is compliant. Will the flat smell of chemicals afterwards?
It should not. Nothing caustic comes indoors. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in the heated tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
My kitchen is tiny, is there room to work?
Usually, because the bulky half of the job happens outside. The tank never comes through your door, which is the point of working this way.
Do you clean the extractor hood as well?
Yes, £28, and a hob is £23–28 depending on type. Mention it when you book so the slot is long enough.
Can you come at the weekend?
We work seven days. A single takes about ninety minutes and a double roughly two hours, and the oven is heat-tested before we sign it off.
