On the 1865 Ordnance Survey most of what is now the Barons Court conservation area was farmland; by the survey of 1894 and 1895 most of its houses had been built. The name is believed to have been thought up by Sir William Palliser, who owned and developed the land. Palliser Road runs south from Harry Wharton Ford's Grade II station of 1905 and ends at the main gates of the Queen's Club.
Gibbs terraces and the mansion blocks on North End Road
W H Gibbs and Co., one of the big developers of West Kensington, built the terraces of Barons Court Road, Castletown, Charleville, Comeragh, Fairholme and Perham Roads. The council's character profile likens them to the stucco terraces of Kensington: four storeys, or three over a semi-basement, with paired porticoes. Building moved west, and past Vereker Road the stucco gives way to plainer red brick; Nos. 2 to 42 Vereker Road went up between April and December 1884. On North End Road, Kensington Hall Gardens (Nos. 187 to 195) is a red-brick mansion block with the date 1899 carved over a first-floor window, and West Kensington Mansions are adjoining five-storey red-brick blocks either side of the south junction with Beaumont Crescent. South towards Lillie Road, Chesson Road and Turneville Road have a conservation area of their own, Turneville and Chesson, for which the council is still writing a profile.
Houses this tall that have been split into flats usually end up with compact kitchens and a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, often a few flights above the pavement. The floor makes no difference to the method. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking in zone D around Barons Court

The council's zone table lists zone D as controlled Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 10pm, with a one-hour maximum stay. One hour is shorter than a single oven clean. Can I book a Sunday?
Yes. We work seven days and a weekend visit costs the weekday price. Zone D is controlled on Sundays too, until 10pm, so check the sign on the bay.
