Green belt is why the work here is houses
Arkley left Hertfordshire for the London Borough of Barnet in 1965, and green belt policy has held building down ever since, which is the single fact that decides what an oven job looks like out here. There is almost no new-build flat stock. What there is instead is detached, often five bedrooms, often three thousand square feet or more, with the kitchen knocked into an island layout and a range cooker sat in the middle of it. If it is a 90cm Rangemaster or similar, that is £114 rather than the £77 a single costs, and it is worth saying so on the phone rather than at the door.
The lanes, the mill and the driveways
Barnet Gate Mill, listed and mapped as Arkley Windmill, is a Grade II* listed four-storey tower mill that was probably built somewhere between 1822 and 1840, worked by wind until 1916, restored once in 1930 and again in 1985 when the missing pair of sails went back on, and there is no public access to it. That is the landmark. The roads that matter for us are Barnet Gate Lane, Barnet Road on the A411, Hendon Wood Lane and Brickfield Lane. No CPZ out here. The catch is the other way round: electric gated driveways, long ones, and the racks and shelves have to come back out to the tank in the van rather than the van coming to the door.

Can the van get up a gated drive?
Usually. If the gate is narrow or there is a height bar, the van waits on the road and the parts get carried. It adds minutes, not pounds.
Why does the caustic side stay outside the house?
The heated tank is in the van. Indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand with non-caustic products, which is how a kitchen with an open-plan island does not end up smelling of chemicals all evening.
How long for a range cooker?
Longer than a double, so allow more than two hours. More burners, more trays, more cast iron.
Do you do the hob and the hood at the same visit?
Yes. Hob £23–28 depending on type, extractor hood £28, both booked with the oven.
