The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded Barnes as Berne, 14 households held by the canons of St Paul's, and the village grew up round the Green. The parish church on Church Road is thought to have been founded within sixty years of that.
Houses round Barnes Green
Most of what stands round the Green now came later. Between 1899 and 1903 the builder James Nichols put up the Lion Houses, starting with Nos. 1 to 14 The Crescent and going on to Laurel Road, Hillersdon Avenue and Glebe Road. Small lions sit on the gate piers, bays and parapets; one account says 1,000 lions arrived when 100 had been ordered. The south side of Church Road was built up over forty years, between 1893 and 1933, and Station Road has 18th-century houses such as Nos. 66 and 68 facing the Green, a mid-1880s red-brick terrace at Nos. 28 to 38, and the former Zeeta Works, once a chocolate factory and bakery and now the OSO Arts Centre. At its eastern end Church Road meets Castelnau, the road north to Hammersmith Bridge, with its own 1842 villas and 1920s council estate.
In large late Victorian and Edwardian houses the kitchen has often been extended or knocked through, and a bigger kitchen is the usual home for a 90cm range or an AGA. Both take longer than a built-in oven. There is more on the method on the range cooker page.

Flats and lettings near Church Road
Not every big house is still one home. In the census area that centres on the Green and takes in most of Church Road, Elm Grove Road and Rectory Road, 18.8% of about 630 households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021, and 32.5% rented privately. When a tenancy ends, the oven is one of the things the inventory clerk opens. What sets the price is the cooker: a single, a double, a range or an AGA, plus a hob or extractor if you add one. It is agreed on the phone before anyone comes out. On the day, dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand.
Parking near the Green: zone CB and zone B1
The centre of the village is stricter than the streets round it. Richmond's zone list gives Central Barnes (CB) as Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, and Byfeld Gardens every day until 9.30pm. The council's 2010 order for CB names residents of Elm Grove Road, Rocks Lane up to No. 71, Ranelagh Avenue up to No. 13 and part of Barnes High Street, and it also puts parking bays on Church Road. Most of the rest, the Lion House streets included, is zone B1, controlled only from 10am to noon on weekdays, and Church Road's residents are B1 residents too. The plate at the end of your road says which one you are in; tell us the zone when you book and we will plan around it.

Is a Saturday easier for parking near the pond?
Not on the CB streets, which are controlled on Saturdays as well. Sunday is outside CB hours except in Byfeld Gardens. We work weekends at the weekday price.
Our AGA is in a Lion House kitchen. What do you need from us?
Switch it off the night before so it is cool when we arrive. A two-oven AGA takes about half a day.
Can you clean the hob at the same visit?
Yes. A gas hob is £28, a ceramic one £23, and the hob or hood of a range cooker £48.
