Houses built for the Vickers works
Most of the housing came later, and quickly. Vickers took over the Crayford armaments works in 1897, and during the First World War its workforce there grew from about 300 to 14,000. The company built an estate for them east of the town, the Crayford Garden Suburb. Green Walk was built in about 1915-16, and a caption on a 1938 photograph says each house had an almond tree in the front garden.
Several hundred cottages went up with a grant from the War Office. Each had at least three bedrooms, and more than half were built of roughcast concrete blocks. After the war Crayford council added more housing to the north.
A house of that age has usually had its kitchen refitted, so the cooker in it could be anything from a freestanding model to a built-in double at eye level. Either way it is cleaned where it stands. Dust sheets go down, the racks, shelves and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand.
Semis and terraces, mostly family houses
The census bears out the estate's shape. Around Green Walk, Barnes Cray Road and School Crescent (the census area Bexley 019C), 50.0% of the 612 households in 2021 lived in a semi and 38.6% in a terrace, and 76.4% owned their home. Further east, round Maiden Lane and the roads named after Kent rivers (Medway, Swale, Stour, Beult), the 525 households of Bexley 019A were 62.5% semis and 33.9% terraces, with almost no flats. There 41.9% rented from a social landlord, most of them from a housing association.
Houses mean ground-floor kitchens. When a housing association tenancy ends, the oven can be booked before the handover like any other visit.

Parking off Barnes Cray Road
Green Walk, Barnes Cray Road, Maiden Lane and the river-named roads do not appear on Bexley's list of controlled parking roads (checked 4 October 2026). The nearest controlled streets are by the town centre, where Waterside and part of Crayford Way are in the Crayford Station zone. Yellow lines and signs still apply, so tell us the street and we will look for somewhere close to park.

London. It is in the London Borough of Bexley, though the post town is Dartford and the Kent border runs just to the east. The price list is the same.
My house on Green Walk dates from 1916. Does that change anything?
No. The price follows the oven, and all the work happens on the oven: its parts soaked and cleaned separately, its cavity and glass by hand in the kitchen.
I am leaving a housing association home. Can the oven be done before the inspection?
Yes. Book it a day or two ahead. You look inside the lit oven before we leave, and photos can be taken on request for your own records.
