Barnes Bridge is a station, not a district. It sits on The Terrace, the riverside road that holds some of the oldest riverside housing in London, where the Georgian mansions along the west bend of the river were begun as early as 1720, and the railway bridge beside it opened in August 1849 to a Joseph Locke design before being rebuilt in 1895 with three wrought-iron bowstring spans. Say Barnes Bridge and you mean the streets around that platform.
Two kinds of kitchen either side of the platform
The Terrace frontage is 18th and early-19th-century and three storeys, so the cooker tends to sit in a period room at garden or basement level rather than a modern fitted run. Behind it, Elm Bank Gardens sits inside the Barnes Green conservation area, designated in January 1969, and it is mostly good 1880s semi-detached houses with later 1930s stock, alongside the Grade II listed church of St Michael and All Angels. Family houses, mostly. Either way the dip-tank method is the same: racks, shelves, trays and runners go to the heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products, so no chemical smell is left behind.
Zone B1 stops at half past six
Barnes is controlled parking zone B1, restrictions 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Parts travel to the tank and back, so we want a bay within carrying distance. The bay is our problem. No premium for an SW13 postcode, no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
One Saturday a year the bridge takes over

The door glass on my Terrace oven is stained. Will it come off?
Usually. We split the door where the design allows so the inner faces get done. On some older units the door will not open safely, and we say so rather than force it.
Is a range cooker priced differently out here?
A 90cm range is £114, a two-oven AGA £143. The road you live on changes nothing.
How long will you be in the kitchen?
A single oven runs about ninety minutes, a double about two hours. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave, and everyone who turns up is insured and DBS-checked.
