The railway bridge opened on 22 August 1849 to a design by Joseph Locke, and several Georgian houses on The Terrace were pulled down to make room for it. Its wrought-iron replacement went up beside it in the 1890s, the old Locke span still stands unused on the upstream side, and the station on the embankment opened on 12 March 1916.

The Terrace starts at the White Hart, a pub of 17th-century origin rebuilt in 1899. Behind the river front the scale drops. Elm Bank Gardens has semi-detached houses from the 1880s and the 1930s around the Grade II listed church of St Michael and All Angels. Malthouse Passage, under the railway embankment, is a row of late 19th-century workers' cottages; most cottages of that kind had gone by the 1930s, when Terrace Gardens and Limes Avenue were laid out.
