Barnehurst station opened in 1895 in Conduit Wood, on the May Place estate of the Barne family, and the station was named after them: Barne, plus hurst, an old word for a wood.
Semis built after the line was electrified
For thirty years the big builders stayed away. Then the Bexleyheath line was electrified in 1926, and J W Ellingham began the Barnehurst Estate on the land next to the station: 578 semi-detached houses, selling at £600 each, starting on Barnehurst Road (until then Hills and Holes Road). The Midfield Parade shops came in 1928 and the estate was finished in the early 1930s.
W H Wedlock Ltd built alongside, starting Lyndhurst Road, Brantwood Road and Risedale Road in 1929, and its roads on this and later estates are named after Lake District places. By 1932 Wedlock had crossed the railway to build the Mayplace Estate between Erith Road and Barnehurst Avenue, where Grasmere, Windermere and Thirlmere Roads are. The Red Barn on Barnehurst Road, built in 1936, was the only new pub.
Nearly half the homes owned outright
The houses by the station are still almost all semis. In the census area round Barnehurst Road, Northall Road, Westfield Road and Midfield Avenue (Bexley 014A), 89.4% of the 586 households in 2021 lived in a semi-detached house. Ownership was 92.5%, and 49.2% of households owned outright.
A semi from the late 1920s has usually had its kitchen refitted at least once, so the oven may now be a built-in double or a wider freestanding cooker. On the day, the order is always the same. Dust sheets go down first; the racks and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and glass are cleaned by hand. The technician is insured and DBS-checked, and you look inside the heated oven before we go.
May Place and the golf course
South-east of the station, Barnehurst Golf Course opened in 1903 on part of the May Place estate. Crayford council bought the land in 1938 and Bexley still owns it, 23.4 hectares in all. The clubhouse stands on the site of May Place itself, a mansion dating from about 1480 that burned down in 1959.

The Barnehurst Station parking zone
Many of these streets are controlled. On Bexley's list of controlled parking roads (checked 4 October 2026), the Barnehurst Station zone takes in Beverley, Eastleigh, Hillingdon, Northall and Westfield Roads, Brantwood and Lyndhurst Roads, the Lake District roads such as Grasmere, Windermere, Thirlmere and Coniston, and parts of Midfield Avenue and Erith Road. The council's table has no hours, which are on the zone's entry signs. It files Barnehurst Road and Barnehurst Avenue under another station's zone name, so read the sign on those two streets. If your house has a drive the van can use, say so when you book.
