Barking's first council houses went up in 1902, when the urban district council built 85 of them in King Edward's Road; by 1939 it had built 2,194.
Abbey, terraces and flats in central Barking
The town is far older than its housing. Barking Abbey was founded in the 660s, and its Curfew Tower, rebuilt around 1460, still stands by St Margaret's church on Abbey Green. When the Victoria County History described the borough in the 1960s, very few of its buildings were more than a century old. North of the old town, King's Road, Queen's Road and Station Road (now Linton Road) were laid out by 1862. To the south, terraces in St Paul's Road, Cobham Road and St Margaret's Road are dated 1881 to 1888, and in Gascoigne Road 1891 to 1894.
The flats came later, and some have already been replaced. The Lintons, three blocks painted red, white and blue with 256 flats, were built by the Corporation of Barking in 1962 at the north end of Linton Road. They were pulled down for the William Street Quarter, all of it affordable housing, which marked its tenth birthday by 2023; its homes line Anne Mews and William Mews. South of the centre, the council has been rebuilding the Gascoigne estate. On the eastern side the first phase, 421 homes called Weavers Quarter, is finished along with Greatfields school, and the council's demolition notice named Anderson House, St Marys and Wheelers Cross for demolition by 16 October 2021. On the western side, outline permission came on 11 June 2018 for 850 homes replacing 179 flats on St Paul's Road and Abbey Road.
Flats and renting in Barking Central
Those figures are for the census area round the station that the House of Commons Library calls Barking Central, which had 3,810 households in 2021. Only 19.1% owned their home; 22.0% rented from the council and another 12.5% from a housing association or similar landlord.
With that much renting, a lot of flats change hands at the end of a tenancy, and the oven is on the checkout list. Since 6 April 2025 most private lets in Abbey, Gascoigne and Northbury wards, which make up the second of the borough's three selective licensing areas, have needed a council licence, and the scheme runs to 5 April 2030. On the day, dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
