Cromwell Tower, in the City of London where Beech Street meets Silk Street, was finished in January 1973. Above a garage and a street foyer it has 38 floors of flats and two of penthouses, three homes to a floor, and of the estate's three towers it is the one nearest Moorgate.
Electric ovens in windowless kitchens
The Barbican Living guide to the estate says there is no gas, so the only option for cooking is electric; the original sales brochure listed a split-level electric cooker in each fitted kitchen. Chamberlin, Powell and Bon recommended gas as well as electricity for all the kitchens, and the City Corporation did not want it. Another decision gave all the window space to living rooms and bedrooms, so kitchens and bathrooms were designed without windows, in the middle or at the back of the flat. The Barbican Centre notes that the kitchen fittings were designed by firms that usually worked on yachts, used to making the most of a small space.
In a kitchen with no window to open, dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand. A compact kitchen like this usually takes a built-in single, and its door is split where the design allows.
Barbican East, from Cromwell Tower to Andrewes House
The City's population tables call the census area for the south of Cripplegate ward Barbican East. It takes in Cromwell Tower, Gilbert House, Speed House, Andrewes House and Willoughby House, and the 2021 Census counted about 1,400 residents in about 830 households there. In that census area, 93.2% of households lived in a purpose-built block, 52.4% owned their flat (34.4% outright, with no mortgage) and 44.1% rented privately.
Andrewes House, on the south side of the lake, holds 192 flats of 13 different types, reached by 11 numbered staircases that each serve two flats a floor. The EC1 side of Barbican station
Most Barbican Estate flats have EC2Y postcodes and are in the City of London. Some of the EC1 addresses across Aldersgate Street, on the station side, are in Islington, in Bunhill ward. Among them is Florin Court on Charterhouse Square, ten storeys and 126 flats built in 1935–37, many of them little more than bedsitters when new; a 1988 refit put back its roof gardens and added a basement swimming pool. In the census output area that covers Florin Court and Glasshouse Yard, 93 of 141 households (66.0%) rented privately in 2021.
Islington puts these streets in parking zone C, where a bay needs a permit, voucher or payment at all hours from Monday to Saturday and until 6am on Sunday. The City Corporation, with Islington's support, runs a school street on part of Charterhouse Square: on weekdays in term time, from 8.15am to 9.15am and from 3pm to 4pm, cameras enforce it and only emergency and refuse vehicles are exempt, so a visit between 9.15am and 3pm keeps the van clear of it. The estate has its own car parks.

Is the Barbican in Islington or the City of London?
The estate is in the City, split between Cripplegate and Aldersgate wards, and the Golden Lane Estate to the north is in Cripplegate as well. Florin Court and Charterhouse Square, across Aldersgate Street, are in Islington. The prices are the same on both sides.
What should I tell you when I book?
Give us the block and the staircase or lift number, and tell us the floor. The price is fixed on the phone before anyone comes out.
Can the electric hob be cleaned at the same visit?
Yes. A ceramic hob is £23 on top of the oven price, and an extractor hood is £28.
