Hopton's Almshouses, built in 1746-9 with money left by Charles Hopton and listed Grade II*, are 20 homes for older people on Hopton Street, a short walk from Tate Modern. Their neighbours are much newer.
Lofts and towers off Hopton Street
Bankside Lofts, designed by CZWG for the Manhattan Loft Corporation, has 129 lofts built around a raised garden. At its centre is a red-brick Italianate former cocoa mill; next to it a 1950s building was extended up and sideways into a spiral tower of stepped terraces. Both have single and double-height lofts on the upper floors. Close by, NEO Bankside by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is four towers of 12 to 24 storeys holding 217 flats around a public garden.
In a loft the kitchen is usually one wall of the main room, so the cooker is close to where people sit and sleep. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Peabody's Southwark Street estate
Peabody opened its Southwark Street estate in 1876: 12 blocks, each of 22 flats. Two central blocks came down in the 1960s to make room for a children's play area, and in the 1990s new blocks went up facing Great Guildford Street. Victorian tenement flats like these usually have small kitchens, with room for a slim freestanding cooker or a built-in single. Dust sheets go down before anything is taken apart, and the racks and trays come out to be soaked and cleaned separately.

The appliance sets the price. A loft with a range cooker is priced as a range cooker, and the figure you agree on the phone is the one on the invoice.
Parking rules on Bankside's streets
Southwark's zone list gives Bankside as C1 and Borough as C2. Two sets of rules matter here:
- Zone C1, Bankside
- controlled every day from 8am to 11pm, on the council's zone list
- Clink Street
- the old streets north of Borough Market are a restricted parking zone, with signs instead of yellow lines; the entry sign gives the times
A weekend visit does not escape C1. The team needs somewhere to park, so tell us which street the entrance is on, and check the sign on the bay when you suggest one. The council's CPZ page lists every zone's hours.

Where is the oven cleaned if my kitchen is part of a double-height living room?
The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand at the oven, normally in your kitchen. Some teams have a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, so ask when you book.
I live in one of the almshouses on Hopton Street. Is a small oven cheaper?
The price follows the type of appliance: a single oven is £77 (a single wide oven is £114) and takes about 90 minutes. You see it lit and clean before we go.
Is Bankside parking controlled on a Sunday?
Yes. Zone C1 runs every day until 11pm, so the van needs a legal bay whichever day you book.
Can the hob be cleaned at the same visit?

Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
