Badgers Dene went up in the 1980s, and a planning inspector looking at it described the place as modest two-storey dwellings set on culs-de-sac off a central spine road. He also called the houses unexceptional in their character and appearance, which is a planner's way of saying brick and tile.
One spine road and a lot of culs-de-sac
The street names are Curling Lane, Bankfoot, Adstock Way, Pagette Way, Meesons Lane and Helleborine, and the postcodes run through the RM17 5 sector rather than the RM17 6 that covers the riverside end of Grays. Wooded open space wraps around the estate. A layout of short culs-de-sac usually leaves kerb space outside the house, and that is where the van wants to be, because the tank and the water are both in it.
The scrubland at the edge is not waste ground
The land beside Hogg Lane, backing onto Adstock Way, Pagette Way and Bankfoot, has been fought over by developers for years. The current bid there is for eight homes and an office, and the Essex Field Club objected that the ground forms part of a nationally significant important invertebrate area. On the other side of the estate, by Curling Lane, Helleborine and Meesons Lane, an approved 2020 scheme for eight semi-detached homes was reworked into a three-storey block of eight flats, six of them two-bed and two one-bed. New flats like those come with integrated ovens fitted flush under the counter.
What the clean involves
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and go into the heated tank in the van. Indoors we degrease the cavity, fan cover and door glass by hand with non-caustic products, then heat-test the oven and sign it off. Nothing is left smelling of chemicals. A built-under double in a Curling Lane house is £110 and takes about two hours. Fixed price, no premium-area surcharge.

The oven is forty years old. Will it survive this?
Usually, yes. We heat-test it before leaving, so if an element is already failing you will know while we are still there rather than a week later.
Do you clean the hob at the same time?
Yes, £23–28 depending on the type. Booking it with the oven saves a second visit.
Will the smell get into the house?
It should not. The soaking is done outside in the van and the products used indoors are non-caustic.
Can you park on a cul-de-sac turning head?
