Avery Hill was Colonel John Thomas North's house: a late Victorian Italianate mansion that T. W. Cutler built for him in about 1888, enlarging an earlier house, with a conservatory 100 feet square for his winter garden. After North died in 1896 the estate was auctioned, and the London County Council bought much of it in 1902; Avery Hill Park opened to the public in 1903-04.
Avery Hill College and the Southwood Site
From 1906 the mansion was Avery Hill College, the first local authority residential college for women. It admitted men from 1959, joined Thames Polytechnic in 1985 and is now part of the University of Greenwich. The university moved out of the Mansion Site in 2020, having sold it to the government for a Harris Federation school that had still not opened by December 2025. The Winter Garden was not part of the sale, and the university still runs the Southwood Site on Avery Hill Road, where the Student Village is a set of brick courts of shared flats for four to nine people.

Parking round Avery Hill Park
Royal Greenwich's Avery Hill zone (AH) is controlled Monday to Friday from 11am to 1pm. On the council's map it covers the north end of Avery Hill Road by Bexley Road and part of Restons Crescent, while the south end of Avery Hill Road, towards Halfway Street, is in the New Eltham zone, controlled from 9.30am to 11am. Some streets between the two sit outside both. The council calls the map a guide only, so the signs on your street are what count.

About 90 minutes. A double takes about two hours.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone should be there at the end to look inside the lit oven. For an empty flat between tenants, keys can be collected by arrangement.
