Purfleet Road, running west out of Aveley village, was already a manor way to Fanns Farm in 1593 and was also known as Water Lane in the 19th century.
Semis and older houses round the High Street
In 1876 Aveley was said to be a quiet farming village, one long street of small houses and cottages, some of them timber framed. Many of those cottages lasted until after the Second World War, but by 1954 only two or three were left. The Old Ship, recorded from 1754, still stands at the corner of High Street and Ship Lane.
Today the streets round the village centre are mostly semis, and mostly owned. In the census area covering the High Street, Purfleet Road and Blenheim Gardens (Thurrock 008D), 56.6% of the 673 households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021 and 16.6% in a detached one; flats were under 2%. Owners were 85.4% of households, and 35.5% owned outright, well above the Thurrock figure of 25.5%.
Houses lived in by the same owners for many years often have a refitted kitchen, and a larger semi or a detached house is the likeliest place for a built-in double or a 90cm range cooker. A range takes two to three hours: both cavities, the racks and the side runners, with the hob or hood priced separately if you want it done too.
The Belhus estate, built by the London County Council
After the war the London County Council bought 1,220 acres in Aveley and South Ockendon to rehouse Londoners and to provide workers for the riverside factories at Purfleet and West Thurrock. The first house on the Belhus estate was occupied in 1950; by 1959 there were 4,000 houses and 1,320 flats. Belhus itself, the Barrett-Lennard family's mansion, came down in 1957, and the estate passed to Thurrock in 1980. In Belhus ward at the 2021 Census, 29.5% of the 3,891 households rented from the council, and terraced houses (36.9%) and purpose-built flats (25.7%) made up most of the homes.
A council tenant moving out has to leave the home in a fit state for the next tenant, and Thurrock Council checks the property once you have left to decide whether to recharge you.
