St Michael's Church in the old village is Grade I listed and dates back to the twelfth century, and the Old Ship pub down the road is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. Aveley sits in Thurrock, 16 miles east of Charing Cross. The London County Council built most of the houses
After the Second World War the LCC bought 1,220 acres across Aveley and South Ockendon to rehouse Londoners and to supply labour for the riverside factories. The first house on the Belhus estate was occupied in 1950, and by 1959 there were 4,000 houses and 1,320 flats standing on it; the estate passed to Thurrock borough council in 1980. That one decision set the kitchen stock. The parish held 2,003 people in 1931 and the built-up area held 9,360 by the 2021 census, and most of the difference is out-county estate housing, which typically means a compact kitchen and a freestanding cooker or one built-in oven under the counter rather than anything wide. A mammoth came out of the clay here
In 1964 an amateur geologist named John Hesketh found the most complete mammoth skeleton ever recovered in the UK in an Aveley clay pit, along with the remains of a straight-tusked elephant; both are in the Natural History Museum, and the Aveley Interglacial, roughly 200,000 years ago, takes its name from the site. Rather less is asked of us. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so there is no smell left behind.
