Ashtead Common is 181 hectares of woodland sixteen miles out of central London, it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and it is owned and run by the City of London Corporation rather than by Surrey or by Mole Valley. There were Roman brickworks on it in the first and second centuries. Ashtead Park, 54 hectares of it, is a Local Nature Reserve on the other side of the village.
The village has two shopping runs, not one
The Street is the old commercial centre and carries the A24 through as a single carriageway. Lower Ashtead, the part nearer the station to the north west, has its own parades on Craddocks Parade and Barnett Wood Lane. Which one you live behind changes where a van can stand, so give us the road rather than the postcode when you call. The 2011 census counted 14,169 people across the three wards, Ashtead Common, Ashtead Park and Ashtead Village.
The railway arrived in 1859 and the houses followed
The Epsom to Leatherhead line opened that year and turned a village around a church of about 1115 into a commuter address, and the building has carried on in waves since, so the stock runs from Victorian and Edwardian through to detached houses put up between the wars and in the fifties. Ashtead Park House, finished in 1790, is now the City of London Freemen's School. Kitchens across that spread are a mix. Some take a built-under single, some a double, some a freestanding range in an old chimney breast, and a gas hob in a Lower Ashtead kitchen is £23–28 added to whichever oven price applies.
