The railway town round Ashford station
When the Victoria County History described the parish in 1911, Ashford was changing fast. The old village street was being rebuilt as shops, an entirely new town had grown up around the station for artisan families, and east of the old centre stood a group of private houses in their own gardens. Down at Ashford Common there was an inn, a smithy and a few cottages at the crossroads, and a few hundred yards to the west several streets were already laid out, with workmen's houses going up on them.
St Hilda's on Woodthorpe Road came next. The red-brick church was mostly built in 1912 but only completed in 1928, and it is listed Grade II.
Houses still outnumber flats by a wide margin. In Ashford Town ward, which takes in the centre and the streets by the station, 39.7% of households lived in a semi-detached house at the 2021 Census and 23.4% in a detached one; 17.0% were in a purpose-built block of flats. Of the ward's 2,968 households, 36.9% owned their home outright.

In April 2025 Spelthorne's planning committee approved a scheme to replace the multi-storey car park on Church Road with a block of 42 flats, some public parking and a commercial unit on the ground floor. Parking on Ashford's roads
Surrey County Council sets the lines on Ashford's streets. Its June 2026 statement of reasons for the Spelthorne parking review 2025-26 shows how varied they are. On the school side of Park Road the county proposes to close a gap in the School Keep Clear markings opposite Nos 48 to 52, with no stopping there from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. Woodthorpe Road has a bay kept for electric cars on charge, Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm, with a four-hour limit. Double yellow lines are also proposed by Fairview Court on Manor Road and on Feltham Hill Road near Church Road.
The same document points to Surrey's online map of existing restrictions, and the signs on your own road are the final word. A single takes about 90 minutes, so a space near the front door helps.
