Barnet Common, West Barnet, then Arkley again
Between 1800 and 1890 the village was often called Barnet Common or West Barnet, according to Barnet Council's local history; the older name Arkley has since come back, and its 'ley' means a clearing and was in use by 1330. The name Rowley, a clearing in a birch wood, appears in a document of 1005. The clay was worked for centuries: a Mr Duck made bricks near Rowley Road, then called Roundabout Lane, in the 17th century, and by the end of the 19th there were at least three brick, tile and pot makers. When the railway reached Barnet the fares to London were expensive, and areas such as Arkley stayed rural.

It is a place of large houses and few of them. The Census small area round St Peter's church (Barnet 007B) had 710 households in 2021. Of those, 67.6% lived in a detached house, 12.7% in a semi and 11.1% in a purpose-built flat, and 86.7% owned their home. Parking near Barnet Hospital
Brett Road, Ryecroft Crescent, Raebarn Gardens, West Close, Farm Close, Hackforth Close and St Peters Close, by Barnet Hospital, joined the hospital's parking zone on a trial from 24 February 2025, and the council made it permanent in February 2026. A valid permit is needed there Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. Further west, give us the road and say whether the van can use the drive.
