Arkley stands 482 feet up, one of the highest points in London. It is a long thin place, strung along Barnet Road between Chipping Barnet and Stirling Corner, and it is really three old hamlets run together: Arkley itself, Barnet Gate and Rowley Green. The name appears as Arkleyslond in 1332, and until the 1890s most people called the place Barnet Common or West Barnet. The parish was abolished in 1965.
The windmill on Barnet Road is Grade II* listed
Barnet Gate Mill is a circular brick tower mill with a cap, a fantail and four common sails. It was working by 1806 and is marked as a corn mill on the Ordnance Survey of the 1860s. It stopped during the First World War and was restored in 1930, though not to grind again. St Peter's Church, built in 1840 to George Beckett's design, is further along the road.
Ribbon development left large kitchens behind it
The farmland here gave way to suburb between the wars, with houses running in a ribbon along Barnet Road and the building carrying on after the 1930s. What that leaves is detached stock on generous plots rather than terraces, and kitchens with room for a range cooker or a two-oven AGA where a London flat would take a 60cm single under the counter. Green space is the local statistic
For its size, Arkley has more Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation than any other district in Barnet, among them Rowley Green Common, Barnet Gate Wood, and Arkley Lane and Pastures. High Barnet on the Northern line is the nearest tube.
