Ardleigh Green Road was called Haynes Park Road first. EA Coryn and Sons started building the Haynes Park estate here in 1927, the road was later renamed after the old green, and Haynes Road is what survives of the estate's own name.
A late-1920s estate sets the kitchens
Ardleigh Green is an enlargement of what was a hamlet in the parish of Hornchurch, and the bulk of it went up as interwar speculative housing on the Coryn plots and the roads that followed. Hardley Green, before the spelling drifted
The name is older than the houses. It was written as Hardley Green, in one spelling or another, until at least the early 17th century, and it comes from the Old English for a clearing in the heather. The land here drains into the headwaters of a Ravensbourne that has nothing to do with the Lewisham river of that name; this one runs into the River Rom.
The college stands where the manor house did
Essex County Council bought Hardley Court and 15 acres of land for £9,000 in 1946, ran the house as a teacher training college for several years, and then put up the first part of what is now Havering College of Further and Higher Education in its grounds in the late 1950s. Gidea Park, Harold Wood and Emerson Park are the stations within reach. The shops are a small parade rather than a centre.

How does the dip-tank method actually work?
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out of the oven and soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass stay put and get degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
What does the price depend on?
The number of ovens and appliances, and nothing else. It is fixed, quoted on the phone, and there is no premium-area surcharge on an RM11 address.
Is a microwave worth adding to the visit?
It is £22 done alongside the oven, which is the cheapest way to have it done.
Can the oven be used straight afterwards?
Yes. It is heat-tested and signed off before we go, and because the soaking happens out in the van there is no chemical smell in the kitchen.
