Marconi House, at 335 Strand on the corner of Aldwych, was built in 1904-6 as the Gaiety Restaurant, with a front designed by Norman Shaw, and in 1922 and 1923 the first programmes of the London radio station 2LO were broadcast from its seventh floor.
Homes on the Aldwych crescent
Aldwych was laid out in the early 1900s, in a scheme that destroyed Wych Street; Kingsway, which Edward VII opened in 1905, runs north from it. The crescent filled with theatres, hotels, offices and the Australian and Indian high commissions, so homes here are few.
The largest group is behind that listed front. Galliard Homes turned Marconi House into 86 apartments and penthouses, launched in December 2012, next door to the ME London hotel. The census output area that holds it, along with parts of Aldwych and the streets off it to the west as far as Tavistock Street, counted 118 households in 2021. Of those, 79.7% rented privately and 17 lived in what the census calls a commercial building, for example an office building, a hotel or over a shop.
The method is the same in any of these buildings: shelves, runners, trays and the fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand over dust sheets.

Parking since the Strand was pedestrianised
Westminster pedestrianised a stretch of the Strand and made Aldwych two-way, and the finished public space was unveiled in December 2022. The crescent is in parking zone G. Its paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, according to the council's March 2026 table. Westminster does not issue on-street visitor permits, so visitors use pay-to-park bays, or single yellow lines outside controlled hours; on a Sunday the paid bays are not controlled.
