Aldgate East station is on Whitechapel High Street, and the road is a ward boundary: the streets to the north are in Spitalfields and Banglatown ward, those to the south in Whitechapel ward. Both are Tower Hamlets; the City of London starts a few hundred metres west, at Aldgate.
Goodman's Fields, south of the station
The name goes back to the sixteenth century, when the Goodman family, and later the Lemans, held more than forty acres here. The land was little built on until after 1680, when the main roads were laid out under Sir William Leman. The modern Goodman's Fields stands on the site of a NatWest office centre. Berkeley had bought the land by the end of 2010 and began building in 2011. The plans by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands set brick-faced courtyard blocks of six to nine storeys around six towers of up to 21; later permissions added storeys and another tower, and took the scheme past 1,000 flats. The first phase, in 2011–13, turned the old CWS drapery showroom at 75 Leman Street into flats as Sterling Mansions.
Round the corner on Alie Street, Altitude Point was built in 2011–14 by Barratt London with the housing association L&Q: a 27-storey tower of 235 flats, 64 of them affordable.
Flats of this kind usually have integrated ovens, and some have a self-cleaning setting. Whichever it is, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat.

- The standard smooth interior. It holds burnt-on grease until someone cleans it.
- Catalytic liners
- Rough-textured side and back panels that absorb fat and burn it off at high cooking temperatures. They are not meant to be scrubbed.
- Pyrolytic cycle
- A locked programme that heats the empty oven far above cooking temperature, leaving ash to wipe out. Racks usually come out first.
Renting in the Aldgate census area
The House of Commons Library names the census area south of Whitechapel High Street, which takes in Goodman's Fields, "Aldgate". At the 2021 Census it had 5,114 households: 55.3% rented privately, 25.2% rented from a social landlord, 15.8% owned and 3.6% were in shared ownership. 81.0% lived in a purpose-built block.
More than half the homes are let privately, which makes the end of a tenancy a common reason for an oven clean. Letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name, photos for the checkout file, and keys collected from an empty flat by arrangement.

Parking zones A6 and C1 at Aldgate East
The council's parking sub-zones also change at Whitechapel High Street. North of it, Wentworth Street, Goulston Street and Bell Lane are in A6, controlled 8.30am to 7pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 2pm on Sundays, except that residents' bays in the streets west of Brick Lane are controlled until 10pm every day. South of it, Leman Street and Alie Street are in C1, controlled 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays only, according to the council's zone page.
