The Company ran a military academy at Addiscombe from 1809; it closed in 1861, when the buildings and 88 acres went at auction to the British Land Company, which sold the land off in plots, mostly to speculative builders. Croydon's appraisal of the East India Estate conservation area, designated in 2008, records over a million stock bricks auctioned from the demolished college, and roads named after figures of 1857: Havelock, Outram and Canning. The college's 1851 gymnasium, Havelock Hall, still stands on Havelock Road, listed Grade II and now flats. Frederick Creed, who invented the teleprinter, lived at 20 Outram Road.
The appraisal sorts the houses into detached villas, usually two storeys and often Italianate; semi-detached pairs, the commonest of them three storeys with a lower ground floor; and short terraces such as 31-35 Elgin Road. Where the kitchen is on that lower ground floor, the steps from the street lead down to it. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity, fan cover and glass are cleaned by hand downstairs, and the dust sheets go down first.

The East Outer permit zone on the estate streets
On Croydon's map of its East Outer permit zone, the shading covers Canning, Clyde, Elgin, Havelock and Outram Roads and Mulberry Lane, and north of Lower Addiscombe Road it takes in Inglis, Nicholson and Grant Roads, laid out in 1862 as the Addiscombe College Estate on smaller plots. The map warns that parking bays are not provided in every road in the zone and that permits are not valid in pay-and-display-only bays.
