Five Archbishops of Canterbury are buried at St Mary's, the Grade I church at the heart of the village, and a carved stone monument of about 1915 in the churchyard remembers them.
The archbishops' summer palace
They were here because of Addington Palace, built in the 1770s with a park landscaped by Capability Brown. In 1807 it was bought by Act of Parliament as a summer residence for the Archbishops of Canterbury, and six of them lived there in the 19th century. After Archbishop Benson died the estate was sold in the late 1890s. The parish joined Croydon in 1928, and the palace and its land were sold again around then. The old park is now divided between housing, golf clubs and a public park, and the palace was the Royal School of Church Music from 1953 to 1996. Croydon's conservation area appraisal credits the long ownership by the archbishops and then Frederick English, and the farming Still family who managed the farms, for keeping Victorian and Edwardian suburbs away from the village. In 1792 there were 132 people in the village, in 22 buildings.
Cottages, lodges and the cul-de-sacs of the 1970s
Most of the old village buildings are along Addington Village Road: farmhouses, farmworkers' cottages, a forge that is still in use, the Cricketers Inn and the former post office. Seven buildings in the conservation area are listed, among them the Flint Cottages at 45-47 Addington Village Road, and the appraisal notes that most old buildings are still single houses rather than flats. Lion Lodges, South Lodge and Stable Lodge, once gatehouses to the palace, are homes now.
Real change came in the 1960s and 1970s, with Roxton Gardens, Boundary Way, The Wicket and the Kent Gate Way bypass; the conservation area was designated in July 1973 in response, and extended in January 2020 to take in the lodges, the parkland and Roxton Gardens. In the census output area that covers Roxton Gardens, Boundary Way and The Wicket (E00005297), 82.5% of the 126 households lived in a detached house in 2021, and 60.2% of the 128 households owned their home outright. A cottage kitchen often has room only for a slim freestanding cooker, while a detached family house may have a double oven or a range.

Getting into the village by van
Addington Village is bypassed by Kent Gate Way and has one road in from the big roundabout, and Roxton Gardens, Boundary Way and The Wicket are cul-de-sacs off it. Croydon's list of 20 controlled parking zones has none in Addington. The team needs somewhere to park; give us the street and house name when you book.

Is Addington the same place as New Addington?
No. New Addington is the estate on the hill to the south-east, begun in 1935 as a garden village by the First National Housing Trust. Addington Village is the old village round St Mary's and Addington Village Road.
Our cottage is listed. Does the clean change anything?
No. Nothing is fitted or altered; the oven parts come out, are cleaned and go back in, and the kitchen is protected with dust sheets.
Can the hob be cleaned on the same visit?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23, on top of the oven price.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes. We work seven days, and Sunday costs the same as a weekday.
