Rufford Tower and Moreton Tower, two blocks of flats of 22 storeys each, were built in 1967 and 1968 on ground between Steyne Road and Lexden Road that was otherwise left open, a short walk north of Acton High Street.
Flats around Acton High Street
The towers came out of a long rebuild of the old town. The Steyne, north of the parish church, had 50 or more tiny cottages by 1842 and was later counted the worst housing in the borough; cottages in East Row were pulled down in 1935, and the council put up a four-storey block, Steyne House, in 1938. By 1956 there was a plan to rebuild 180 acres of the town, Crown Street included, over 25 years. The early 1960s brought a shopping precinct on the north side of the High Street. On the south side, the sites behind the shops down towards Avenue Road were cleared, with new housing nearly finished by the late 1970s; the later schemes there were red-brick flats and maisonettes.
Ealing redrew its wards in May 2022, and the High Street now sits in South Acton ward. At the 2021 Census that ward had 7,235 households: 32.6% rented privately, 30.0% rented from the council or a housing association, 32.5% owned outright or with a mortgage, and 4.7% were in shared ownership. Flats of the 1960s and 1970s usually have a compact kitchen with a built-in single oven or a 60cm freestanding cooker.
The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, on dust sheets laid before anything comes apart.
Parking in Zone K and on Lexden Road
The High Street, King Street, Market Place and Churchfield Road are in Ealing's Zone K, Acton Central, controlled from 9.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays. Lexden Road, where both towers have their addresses, has a zone of its own. Zone RM is controlled every day from 8am to 10pm, so a Sunday visit gives no break from it. The council also tells drivers to check the street signs for any other restriction. The team needs somewhere to park, so give us the street, or the tower and the floor, when you call.
