Acton Town station opened on 1 July 1879 as Mill Hill Park, the same name as the estate of large houses near it, and was renamed on 1 March 1910. The brick and glass ticket hall at the corner of Gunnersbury Lane and Bollo Lane is Charles Holden's rebuild of 1931 and 1932, listed Grade II since 1994.
Mill Hill Park, laid out in 1877
Mill Hill House and its land, offered for building in 1869 and again in 1873, were finally sold in 1877. A private estate followed, with gates at its entrances on Avenue Road, and its three roads, Heathfield Road, Avenue Crescent and Avenue Gardens, made a cul-de-sac between the middle-class streets to the north and working-class South Acton. Several large houses were up by 1885, mostly at the Avenue Road end. In the post-war council rebuilding of South Acton, between Bollo Lane, Avenue Road, Strafford Road and the railway, nearly all the older buildings were demolished except this estate.
Ealing made Mill Hill Park a conservation area. Its 2007 management plan credits the London developer William Willett with the surge of house building there in the late 19th century, counts the generous plots among the area's outstanding features, and lists the clutter that comes with splitting large houses into flats: gas meters, bins, letterboxes and doorbells or intercoms.
The 2021 Census gives the mix today. In the small census area that covers Heathfield Road and Avenue Crescent (LSOA Ealing 033A), 30.6% of households lived in part of a converted house, 46.0% in a purpose-built block and only 1.7% in a detached house, and 38.8% rented privately; the area had 636 households.
A large house split into flats usually means several small kitchens under one roof, each with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. A house still lived in as one home is more likely to keep a big kitchen with a double oven or a range. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Parking in Zone J around the station
Heathfield Road, Avenue Crescent, Avenue Gardens and long stretches of Gunnersbury Lane, including blocks such as Beatrice House and Virginia House, are in Ealing's Zone J. The zone is controlled for two hours a day: 9am to 10am and 3pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Outside those hours its permit rules do not apply, though the council says to check the street signs for anything else. A single takes about 90 minutes and a double about 2 hours, so a start soon after 10am leaves five hours before the next control at 3pm, enough even for a 90cm range, which takes 2 to 3 hours.
Acton Town station is in Ealing, close to the Hounslow boundary. A few W3 addresses right beside it, W3 8LH among them, are in Hounslow's Chiswick Gunnersbury ward, where the parking rules are Hounslow's.

Our flat is one floor of a big Mill Hill Park house. Is the kitchen big enough?
Usually. The work at the oven is the cavity, the fan cover and the door, with dust sheets down first.
Can you come on a weekday morning in Zone J?
Yes. Booking for 10am or soon after avoids both control hours for a single, a double or a range. Weekend visits cost the weekday price if that suits better.
