Acton Green had about 60 laundries in 1873 and over 170 by 1890, and the terraces that went up to house the people doing that work are still the houses we clean ovens in. The 1901 census counted 568 men and 2,448 women in the trade around here. Soapsuds Island is not a nickname anyone uses now, but the street plan it left behind is why a Victorian back-addition kitchen in W4 is the shape it is: narrow, tacked on the rear, one door in and out, a cooker jammed against the wall.

What the terraces hold

Getting the van there
The railway embankment carrying the District and Piccadilly lines cuts Acton Green Common off from Chiswick Back Common, so there is no straight run across and everything goes round by Acton Lane or Bollo Lane. Chiswick Park station is on that junction, about 150 metres up from Chiswick High Road, Grade II listed since 1987, and the roads either side of it are Ealing controlled bays. My kitchen is tiny. Where does the mess go?
Out of the door. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go straight to the heated tank in the van, and what is left indoors is hand work on the cavity, fan cover and glass with non-caustic products.
Is this any good for an end-of-tenancy check-out?
Yes, and the conversion flats here turn over often enough that it is half of what we do on this side of W4. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
Can you get behind a cooker that is wedged in?
Usually. If the gas hose will not allow it we say so rather than drag it and risk the connection.
