The listed road bridge that carries the village over the River Roding is built of local red brick with limestone keystones, and Epping Forest District Council dates it to the late 18th or early 19th century. The name is thought to come from "AEffa's bridge".
Market Place houses at the back of the pavement
The council's conservation area leaflet of 1997 describes Market Place as a triangle of mainly two-storey buildings, set close to the footway with little or no front garden, and plots that widen along Ongar Road. The oldest of them is a 14th-century hall house on Market Place, listed Grade II*. The parish grew after the war. The Victoria County History, published in 1956, puts Lambourne parish at 1,371 people in 1951, "the increase being due mainly to the building of council houses". It lists the Pancroft estate in east Abridge, with a group of prefabs and fifty post-1945 council houses, about twenty council houses north of the school, and Hillman's Cottages, six pairs on the main road east of the village, from about 1935.
Lambourne ward, which takes in Abridge, had 879 households at the 2021 Census. Of those, 48.0% lived in a semi-detached house, 21.4% in a detached one, 16.7% in a terrace and only 6.6% in a purpose-built flat; 45 households lived in a caravan or mobile home.
