Three Rivers designated the Abbots Langley conservation area in October 1969, one of the earliest in Hertfordshire. It is drawn tightly round St Lawrence's church, begun in the 1140s, and the High Street down to Kitters Green; the oldest cottages, 9 and 9a High Street, opposite the church, date from the early 16th century.
How the village grew south from the church
On the 1839 tithe map Kitters Green was still a separate hamlet. On the first-edition Ordnance Survey maps (1846-1901), Adrian Road, Breakspeare Road and Langley Road were in place at Kitters Green and the gap between the hamlet and the village had almost closed. A row of terraced houses at 71-79 High Street, each with a bay window, followed in 1880.
Most of the village is newer than that. An estate round Hazelbury Avenue, Hazelwood Lane, Broomfield Rise and Upper Highway went up between 1922 and 1945, most probably before 1939, and by about 1991 Kindersley Way, Manor House Gardens and both sides of Tibbs Hill Road were built up too. On Bedmond Road, the thatched Ovaltine model dairy farm of 1932 closed in 1979; its buildings have been homes, called Antoinette Court, since 1982.
Houses and tenure in the Abbots Langley ward
Three Rivers' Abbots Langley & Bedmond ward, which covers the High Street, Kitters Green and Bedmond, had 2,702 households at the 2021 Census. A third (33.8%) lived in a semi-detached house, 29.1% in a detached house, 19.1% in a terrace and 13.5% in a purpose-built flat. Most owned their home (71.8%), and 18.1% rented from the council or a housing association.
So there is no one typical cooker. A timber-framed cottage in the old village may have a small kitchen with a freestanding cooker, while a house on the Hazelbury Avenue estate is more likely to have a built-in oven from a later refit. The method is the same for both.

The team needs somewhere to park close by. Three Rivers' permit zones list, dated July 2025, has no street in Abbots Langley village. On the High Street, the council's Causeway House car park is free, with a 36-hour maximum stay. Yellow lines and signs still apply, so tell us the street and whether there is a drive.

My cottage is listed. Does the cleaning touch the building?
No. Dust sheets go down, the removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand.
Can the hob and extractor be done at the same visit?

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
