The first brick of the Bostall Estate was laid on 28 May 1900, and by 1914 the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society had built 1,052 houses on two old farms south-west of Abbey Wood station.
The Co-op's Bostall Estate
The Society bought Bostall Farm in 1887 and Suffolk Place Farm in 1899, and its own works department designed and built the houses. Some street names come straight from the co-operative movement: Federation Road, Congress Road, Conference Road. A tablet marking the first brick went up at the corner of McLeod Road and Bostall Lane, and was later moved onto a wall facing the lane. A chalk mine on the estate supplied material for the roads and lime for the plaster inside the houses; in 1914 its tunnels were fitted out as an air-raid shelter, with an entrance beside the Co-operative hall.
A terraced house of that age often has a modest kitchen at the back, and the cooker in it is likely to be a later fit, freestanding or built in. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Dust sheets go down first.

Four parking zones around the station
The Elizabeth line has run from Abbey Wood to Paddington since 24 May 2022. Greenwich and Bexley both run permit zones around the station, and the hours depend on which side of the boundary you are.

All four are listed as weekday-only, so a Saturday or Sunday visit falls outside those permit hours and costs the same as a weekday. Zones and trials change, so check the signs on your street, and tell us the street so we can find a space to park.
