Abbey Road is named after Stratford Langthorne Abbey, founded in 1135 and Cistercian from 1147, which by the 15th century controlled most of West Ham parish. It was dissolved in 1538. Its Great Gate, turned into a house after the Dissolution, stood in Bakers Row, beside today's DLR station, until about 1825.
A community garden over the abbey gate
The remains of the gatehouse lie under Abbey Gardens on Bakers Row, part of a scheduled monument. Local residents formed the Friends of Abbey Gardens and turned the plot into a community garden in 2006, to a design by the artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie. Between 2007 and 2010 Museum of London Archaeology dug there with Newham Council and local volunteers, and found the gate, part of the abbey's great drain and a foundation on the site of the church.
Bakers Row was once part of Abbey Road, lined with a terrace of small houses built mainly for workers at the local factories. About 400 metres west of the station stands Abbey Mills Pumping Station, finished in 1868 to Joseph Bazalgette's design and listed Grade II*.
Flats and terraces either side of the DLR
There are not many homes here. The census area around Bakers Row and the east side of Abbey Road had about 700 households in 2021: 44.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 34.1% in a terraced house. By tenure, 38.1% rented privately, 23.7% rented from the council and 29.7% owned. West of the line, Canning Road has the units of the Abbey Trading Estate and the Channelsea House flats at No. 20.
Abbey House, a three-storey block of 12 flats on Bakers Row beside the station, was the subject of two schemes that Newham refused. On 30 October 2024 a planning inspector allowed its owner's appeal for a row of two-storey houses and a building of 4 to 14 storeys, 74 homes in all, and dismissed the appeal for a separate scheme of 72 homes in up to nine storeys.
A terraced house here can have a freestanding cooker or a built-under double; a flat in a newer block may have a built-in single under the hob. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.

Two parking zones at Abbey Road station
The DLR line is roughly where two of Newham's zones meet. Channelsea House and the Canning Road side are in Stratford South West; Bakers Row and the houses on the east side of Abbey Road are in Stratford South East. Both are controlled from 10am to noon on weekdays. Both are also among the five event-day zones, where a West Ham home match or another event at the London Stadium or in the Olympic Park changes the hours to 8am to 9pm, and the council says that applies on a bank holiday too.
